What will the arrival of 5G technology mean for mechanical workshops?

The advent of the 5G standard will drive the autonomous vehicle, which will directly influence workshop activity.

5G technology will involve a number of changes in vehicles, making them more autonomous. The elements that enable communication between vehicles and infrastructure will require revisions and updates.

Vehicle safety checks are about to change forever. The entry of the 5G standard promises to revolutionize mobility and, with it, the work carried out in vehicle repair and maintenance workshops. Vehicle safety will increasingly depend on its communications with other cars and with infrastructures. The elements that make them possible will require revisions, updates and overhauls.

Increasingly sophisticated sensors

Electromechanical workshops are already used to dealing with all kinds of electronic solutions in vehicles. Sensors are increasingly present as vehicles gain autonomy. It is no longer a rarity for a car to be able to park itself or to stop if it detects an obstacle.

However, the advent of 5G will bring greater complexity to vehicles, as they will become information exchange nodes within a large network that will communicate vehicles with infrastructure and even with other road users.

The issuing, receiving and processing of all these data will greatly change the configuration of the vehicles, as well as the elements to be checked. In this regard, some automotive components will gain the ability to exchange, store and process data.

At what point is the self-driving car?

Despite the many reports that assume that the self-driving is already a reality, this is not entirely true. The technology is already developed and there are even experiments with Level 5 vehicles, which means fully automated driving; however, neither the legislation nor the roads are yet ready for its popularisation.

To drive by themselves, cars need to connect with other vehicles and infrastructures in order to exchange data. This is the way they perceive what is happening in the environment in order to make the right decisions at any given moment. Hitherto, communication standards had neither the capacity nor the speed to transmit such a vast amount of information.

Once 5G networks are operational, the necessary information can be exchanged immediately and on a large scale. This is of vital importance to transmit, for example, the existence of incidents on the roads and for vehicles to react immediately, thus avoiding accidents.

The combination of 5G technology with the Internet of Things (IoT) will enable the technological development necessary to implement infrastructures that will finally allow the self-driving vehicle to break through. At the same time, legislation will have to be adapted accordingly.
