Seven out of ten European distributors offer technical support to workshops

Workshops receive direct technical support from their European distributors, who also offer diagnostic equipment, technical information, and training programs in business management or marketing.

There are many reasons why a workshop might decide to join a network. In the European case, the formula offered by spare parts distributors is one of the most widely followed. This is due to several factors, but primarily because of the technical assistance support they provide. Specifically, seven out of ten spare parts distributors in Europe—according to a survey of 382 parts dealers integrated into FIGIEFA—offer technical assistance hotlines, as well as remote diagnostic support services. This means remote assistance to complete repairs that cannot be performed locally with the available tools, according to the Roland Berger study on the “Independent Aftermarket Landscape.”

Beyond direct technical assistance, they also offer remote services based on a connection to the vehicle through a VCI tool, plugged into the OBD port. This allows specialized technicians, based remotely, to interact directly with the vehicle and complete a repair on behalf of the workshop.

Thus, wholesale distributors play a vital role in supporting workshops, enabling them to carry out maintenance and repair actions quickly and profitably. Furthermore, they also provide diagnostic equipment, spare parts catalogs, and technical information prepared by data publishers or themselves, as well as training programs. Moreover, some players also offer assistance in business management matters such as marketing, invoicing, or financing.

“This orchestration and curation of products and services by wholesale distributors allows companies in the IAM (Independent Aftermarket) value chain to concentrate on their core task of ensuring road mobility at affordable prices. In this way, the IAM ensures that all vehicle makes and models in Europe can be sold with the certainty that they will receive the necessary care in the future. The IAM makes an essential contribution to the satisfaction of private consumers and businesses by extending the life of their vehicles and reducing associated maintenance costs. By doing so, it also supports the residual values of the vehicles,” maintains the aforementioned report, which also analyzed the frequency of deliveries to workshops and the number of existing independent workshops and official dealers.
