The cost of repairing a breakdown depends mainly on two variables: firstly, the cost of the spare part to replace the damaged part(s) and, secondly, the time required by the mechanic to carry out the operation. In most cases, therefore, the severity of the breakdown is determined by the cost of the repair. It is therefore essential to take account of both factors in order to strike a balance between the profitability of the workshop and customer satisfaction.
The Royal Automobile Club of Spain (RACE) has compiled a list of the ten most expensive breakdowns based on a labour cost of 65 euros per hour, a labour price halfway between what a dealership can charge and what a multi-brand workshop can charge. These are as follows:
1. Engine flywheel
It costs around 1,500 euros to repair and, although it is not a cheap part, most of the budget is spent on labour as accessing and replacing it requires dismantling and then reassembling several elements of the timing system and the engine itself.
2. Air conditioning
At a cost of around 1,500 euros, it usually involves components such as the compressor or evaporator, the former being simpler and cheaper and the latter more expensive.
3. Particulate filter
Repairing a particulate filter can cost the driver up to 2,500 euros. In this case, the installation is simple and takes very little time, but the operation is very expensive.
4. Turbo
Between 2,500 and 3,000 euros. This is a relatively expensive component, hence the high repair cost. It also takes about 10 hours to repair.
5. Connecting rods
Between 2,500 and 3,000 euros, the cost of repairing these parts is directly proportional to the number of cylinders in the engine, as replacing them is quite laborious.
6. Crankshaft
It has a repair cost of around 3,300 euros. The crankshaft is another part that is difficult to access due to its position and connection to other parts, and requires many hours of work to repair or replace.
7. Injectors
One of the most worrying elements for diesel drivers. Replacing them can cost up to 4,000 euros due to their high cost, although the work involved is not excessive.
8. Cylinder head
Cylinder head failure is one of the most expensive engine failures, requiring up to 16 hours of labour to repair and costing up to 5,000 euros.
9. Engine block
An engine block failure can cost a similar amount, around 5,000 euros. Replacing it can take up to 20 hours of labour, adding significantly to the bill.
10. Gearbox
The gearbox is one of the most complex parts of the car, so repairing it can involve a variety of parts and, above all, many hours of work. The cost depends on the age of the vehicle.
