Oil changes are probably one of the most frequent operations in electromechanical and quick service workshops. Since it needs to be done every one or two years, depending on mileage and the engine type, it is a common reason for workshop visits. For this reason, many workshops keep large containers of certain lubricants—the most commonly used ones—so they can be used quickly on a day-to-day basis.
However, lubricating oils and greases, like most materials, deteriorate over time. Therefore, it is recommended to follow good storage practices for lubricating oils and greases to ensure they are always available when needed, rotating stock to guarantee that products are used before any significant loss in their performance occurs.
For example, the storage environment greatly affects their shelf life. Both high heat (above +43ºC) and extreme cold (below -18ºC) can affect their stability. Heat increases the oil’s oxidation level, while cold can cause wax formation and sediment buildup. Additionally, alternating exposure to heat and cold may cause contamination and moisture to be drawn into the containers. A temperature range between -18ºC and +43ºC is acceptable for storing most lubricating oils and greases.
Light can also affect the color and appearance of lubricants. They should be kept in the original opaque metal or plastic containers in which they were packaged. Lubricants should be stored in a dry place, preferably indoors.
Drums and other lubricant containers should not be stored in areas with a high level of airborne particles. This is especially important when storing a partially used container for later use. Additionally, oxygen and carbon dioxide in the environment can react with lubricants and affect their viscosity and consistency. To protect them properly, lubricant containers should remain sealed until they are ready to be used.
Good practices for lubricant storage:
Store in a dry, cool indoor area where airborne particles are minimal. Indoor storage also prevents deterioration of labels and containers from exposure to environmental conditions. The ideal storage temperature range is from 0ºC to +25ºC.
If drums are stored outdoors, use plastic covers or place oil drums with openings away from water and contaminants.
Always store greases in an upright position to prevent oil separation.
When necessary, acclimate grease to the proper usage temperature before starting to use it.
Rotate inventory: check the fill date on containers and use the oldest first.
Keep containers tightly closed or covered to avoid contamination.
Clean lids and container rims before opening to prevent contamination.
Use clean tools and equipment when pumping or handling lubricants and greases.
