The main symptoms of a faulty dual-mass flywheel

Vibrations, rattles and noises are the key to detecting possible faults in the dual-mass flywheel, the poor condition of which, apart from being annoying for the driver, can lead to major breakdowns.

Having a defective or excessively worn dual-mass flywheel can be very annoying for the driver. In fact, some of the main symptoms are directly noticeable while driving, in the form of vibrations from the engine, especially in the pedal area, but also in the steering wheel, seat, etc., even at idle or low engine speeds. But they can also be accompanied by a rattling or metal-on-metal noise which, in addition to the loss of comfort, increases the risk of a serious breakdown…

This is one of the main characteristics that can be noticed when the vehicle has a faulty dual-mass flywheel. But it is not the only one. If the vehicle vibrates when the clutch pedal is released slightly when starting, a rattling noise when the engine is stopped and a reduction or disappearance of the vibrations as soon as the clutch pedal is depressed at idle speed, this is another symptom. These are the main symptoms:

1. VIBRATIONS AND METALLIC RATTLING SOUND AT IDLING SPEED

If the vibrations are minimal when accelerating slowly but increase in frequency, the problem is most likely with the dual mass itself. Another way to check is to depress the clutch pedal also at idle speed. If the metallic rattling disappears, the problem is most likely with the flywheel.

2. VIBRATIONS WHEN RESTING THE FOOT ON THE CLUTCH

If this vibration is not accompanied by a metallic sound at idle, it means that the flywheel is not completely damaged and, although the spring system is somewhat worn and cannot absorb all the vibrations, the component is still partially functional.

3. KNOCKING AT ENGINE STOP

When the engine speed suddenly drops below idle, the vibrations in the powertrain components transmitted by the engine shutdown increase.

4. STARTING SHUDDER

The engine speed is still low and the engine starts to generate thrust, so the flywheel, which is somewhat worn, is able to absorb vibrations at idle speed, but not when the engine speed increases, because the flywheel has to do more absorbing work in these situations.

5. NOISES DURING IGNITION

First check that there are no fault codes in the engine control unit. The starter motor must be in good condition, as it is responsible for starting the engine at the correct speed, and the battery must also provide sufficient energy for starting processes. The soft stop throttle valve must not be blocked or partially closed, as it is the element that provides a vibration-free stopping of the engine. Similarly, the condition of the engine and gearbox mounts must be checked.
