Repairing an electric vehicle presents different challenges for workshop professionals. Different technology, stricter safety measures, and above all, an issue that has been highlighted since their first appearances: the lower cost of repairing an electric vehicle compared to a combustion engine one. How much lower? Solera has put numbers on it: 28% less.
The reason is simple: in electric vehicles, many traditional combustion engine parts—such as catalytic converters, alternators, and crankshafts—disappear. This represents nearly €21,000 in parts that are eliminated with electrification and is the main reason why the average cost of mechanical repair is 28% lower compared to diesel or gasoline vehicles.
Looking in more detail, the average repair bill for a combustion vehicle is €513, while for an electric car it drops to €368. However, since there were only 170,581 electric vehicles in Spain at the end of 2023, their contribution to aftermarket mechanical revenue is just €62.7 million.
The maintenance cost of an electric car is generally 29% cheaper than a gasoline vehicle, 21% less than a diesel, and 25% lower than a hybrid.
If cost per kilometer is analyzed (over 3 years and 90,000 km), the difference between an electric car and a diesel is only 27%. Compared to a hybrid, the difference is 33%, and compared to a gasoline vehicle, 42%.
Despite the economic benefits for the end consumer, the electrification of the vehicle fleet is progressing slowly and remains limited. By 2030, it is estimated that Spain will still not reach one million electrified cars, including both hybrids and pure electric vehicles. This slow adoption is mainly due to a lack of accessibility for middle-class households, which explains why only 3.2% of households own an electrified car. Of these households, nearly 40% have monthly incomes exceeding €3,000, according to the INE.
