The global raw material and supply crisis, coupled with the shortage of microchips and semiconductors, is driving the automotive industry into a near ‘perfect storm’ in terms of manufacturing. This applies not only to vehicles, with lead times for new car deliveries in some cases exceeding 12 months, but also to components for the aftermarket.
The inconvenience for workshops of having to order a spare part and having it take weeks or even months to arrive is encouraging a trend in the industry to try to repair existing parts where possible, rather than replacing them, as was usually the case when there were no such supply problems.
However, if there is a significant delay in the arrival of the part, many customers will opt to ask the workshop to fit a scrapped part, causing countless problems for workshops. It should be remembered that workshops are not allowed to use such spare parts without the express consent of the customer. In fact, more and more workshops are refusing to carry out repairs with used parts because of the time wasted.
The first problem is finding a part in good condition. It is not uncommon to have to order two, three or even four components to find one that works well. This is time that the workshop has to spend, not only on requesting the scrapped part, but also on checking its condition or, in the worst case, fitting the part with the associated labour time, only to find that it does not work properly once fitted.
However, even in cases where the old part is replaced by a scrapped part and the fault is rectified, the problem may recur or get worse after a while because the used part does not have the same guarantees and reliability as a completely new part. Despite this, in many cases, it is the workshop itself that has to pay for the second repair, due to the obligation to provide a warranty period for the repair.
Due to the loss of time and the fact that in many cases repairs cannot be carried out to the required quality, going to a reliable workshop means that you will have the resources available to repair the old part if you cannot find the new part you need, so that you do not have to go to the scrap yard.
