More and more cars are arriving at the workshop equipped with electric parking brakes. This element, also known as an EPB, is gradually replacing the manual parking brake, especially in high-end models, is made up of a series of components, all connected by a communication bus.
The main parts of electric parking brake systems include:
- Activation button. With manual EPBs, the brake is activated and deactivated by pressing a key located on the dashboard or centre console of the vehicle.
- Control unit. This unit receives the manual or automatic drive signal and processes it to send information to the braking system.
- Electric motors. These are DC motors that drive the piston to actuate the brake callipers.
- Spindle. This element is responsible for transmitting the movement of the electric motor, transforming the rotary movement into an upward movement.
- Bowden cable. In cable-operated systems, this is the component responsible for operating the brakes, pulling the shoe against the drum or the pads against the disc, depending on the braking system.
- Rear brake elements. They can be drums or callipers and act according to the information received from the control unit.
ADVANTAGES AND DISADVANTAGES OF THIS SYSTEM
The main advantage of this system is that it saves space in the car and, of course, it is more comfortable for the driver. However, as an electronic system, it is more prone to failure than the manual system and more complex to repair. It also requires special maintenance with electronic diagnostic equipment.
On the other hand, in the event of a battery failure, it is necessary to consult the owner’s manual to find out how to release the battery to unlock the car or, conversely, how to immobilise the car even if the battery is not functioning.
Despite these drawbacks, the ease of use and aesthetic appeal of the system mean that it is becoming increasingly popular in new cars and is no longer limited to the most expensive models.
