Who hasn’t had their car’s brakes make a noise? This is one of the most common driver complaints related to the vehicle’s braking system. When we apply the brake and it squeaks, we end up taking it to the workshop and there they usually decide to change the brake pads.
However, this is not the right answer in many cases, since other brake components may be the cause of the noise, such as the brake shoe, calliper or disc, in addition to the brake pads themselves.
Depending on the frequency of the noise, workshops can improve the noise performance in different ways. In general, low frequency noises are due to the major components of the brake system (discs, calliper, shoe), so this is where improvement actions have to be focused.
In medium and high frequency noises, the famous brake squeaks, you need to act on the pads as this will certainly improve the acoustic problem. Normally, in this range of noise, high quality pads include, in the critical references, anti-noise sheets and chamfers, always depending on the layout of the brake system.

Cleaning eliminates noise
To achieve vibration- and noise-free brakes, workshop repairs must pay special attention to proper cleaning of the brake system.
To avoid these problems for the braking comfort, the most important surfaces to take care of their cleaning would be:
- Hub: An unfortunately common mistake is to apply a little grease on the surface of the hub. Never apply grease, the surface must be as clean as possible of rust and any other type of particles that may cause oscillations in the disc rotation.
- Wheel support: Check its status
- Brake shoe: The pads must slide over the shoe without resistance. Dirt and rust prevent this sliding.
At REMSA we recommend using a wire brush to properly clean the contact surfaces and, if necessary, finish with a soft sanding. It is important to note that rusty and dirty surfaces are a possible cause of vibration and braking comfort problems.
