How do low temperatures affect braking system components?

Problems with brake fluid, brake pads or handbrake may be due to the cold or to salt on the road surface.

With the arrival of cold winter temperatures, there are certain vehicle components that may experience problems. If there is one that is particularly sensitive in this regard, it is the battery. But there are many others with which it is necessary to take precautions, check their condition and, if necessary, carry out adequate preventive maintenance to avoid more serious problems. And among these are the different parts of the braking system such as brake pads, brake fluid, brake lines or the handbrake.

Because it is not only the weather conditions at this time of year that affect the components of the braking system, but also dirt or even salt used to de-ice the roads can cause system failures. And that means that the chances of an accident may increase, not only because of the lack of grip in rain, snow or ice, but also because of the greater difficulty in stopping the vehicle in the event of ordinary or emergency braking.

Dirt as a cause

For example, brake pads can be affected by the increased dirt on the roads at this time of the year, as well as by the humidity of the environment. In this case, it can cause both squealing and friction with the brake discs, which can not only reduce the braking power in everyday use, but even crystallize the brake pads and require them to be replaced.

The possible freezing of the brake fluid is also a factor to be taken into account with low temperatures, which in any case can lead to its deterioration. The most obvious symptom that this may have happened is that the brake pedal feels too soft, in which case REMSA recommends that you visit a reliable workshop immediately to check the problem and, if necessary, replace the brake fluid until it is completely full. If the fluid level drops, the brake lines should also be checked to see whether they are corroded, as they may have caused leaks or seepage.

Salt is corrosive

The most useful product for removing dangerous ice patches that can form on roads is salt. In winter it is very common to see machines spreading salt at all hours to melt the ice. However, it is a particularly corrosive product for certain vehicle components. It is therefore advisable to wash the chassis and suspension system to remove any salt deposits. Otherwise, this dirt can cause the handbrake to jam, cause a fracture in the handbrake and thus prevent it from working properly.
