The advent of electric cars has influenced the profile of workshop professionals, who increasingly require technical and computer skills. As vehicles have become more digital and incorporate new technologies, the profile of workshop professionals has changed. “Now mechanics seem more like surgeons than repairers,” says Arturo Rojo, director of Talleres del Race (Royal Automobile Club of Spain).
A NEW WAY TO REPAIR
The electric car meant a change in the way faults were diagnosed and repaired: “Switchboards, relays, fuses… it has reached a point where what is done in the workshop is to take out one part and put in another,” explains Rojo. “Something similar will happen with autonomous cars: maintenance will be cheaper than that of a conventional car because it will have fewer wearing parts, oils, belts…”, he adds.
This evolution in repairs will force mechanics to keep up to date with the latest technical and computer knowledge, as the cars of the future will need frequent software updates (e.g. with road maps or traffic warnings) to avoid possible hacks.
