False Beliefs About Maintenance and Breakdowns of Electric Vehicles in the Workshop

They don’t require more check-ups than combustion vehicles, they don’t break down more often, and their maintenance isn’t more expensive… these are some of the false beliefs surrounding electric vehicles and their visits to workshops.

The number of electric vehicles arriving at workshops in Spain is still very low. However, it is important that professionals do not neglect their training and knowledge, as sooner or later they will have to deal with their repairs and maintenance. In fact, doubts in this area are among the main reasons hindering the spread of electric cars, since 44% of drivers refuse to buy one due to the belief that it will require more maintenance than a vehicle with an internal combustion engine, whether gasoline or diesel, according to GIPA.

Norauto aims to debunk the ten main false beliefs about electric vehicles:

  1. It is false that they need more check-ups than combustion vehicles. In principle, the same check-ups as a thermal vehicle must be done, although the frequency will depend on the brand, mileage, and time since registration.
  2. It is false that they don’t need a tune-up. It’s different, but that doesn’t mean it’s unnecessary. In addition to the regular check-up, components such as the electric motor and battery coolant, charging cable, as well as high-voltage cables and their casings are inspected. The battery pack (if accessible), the condition of the charging connector, and an electronic diagnostic of the battery pack are also reviewed.
  3. It is false that electric vehicle maintenance is more expensive. On the contrary, they lack components that must be changed or checked in thermal engine cars, such as engine oil, filters, belts, or spark plugs.
  4. It is false that electric vehicles break down more often than gasoline or diesel cars. There is no reason for this claim, and in fact, according to several studies, the electrical part suffers fewer issues.
  5. It is true that electric vehicles wear out their tires more quickly, as the cars are heavier and the torque is greater.
  6. It is false that workshops are not prepared to maintain and repair these types of vehicles. Not all workshops are ready, but more and more networks are investing in training in this segment.
  7. It is true that the most frequent and costly breakdown in electric vehicles is the battery. Manufacturers usually offer a warranty of approximately eight years or 160,000 kilometers. Over time, components deteriorate and storage capacity decreases.
  8. It is true that electric vehicles are more affected by extreme temperatures, both high and low.
  9. It is true that the car can deteriorate sooner if completely discharged. This can damage the capacity and accelerate degradation. If it happens frequently, range will be lost and lifespan reduced.
  10. It is false that the MOT (ITV) for electric cars is less strict. It is the same, paying special attention to specific components unique to this type of vehicle.
