Inflation continues to drive up the average cost of repairs in workshops. This is a reality now backed by data from a report by CarGarantie, which states that in 2023, the average cost of repairs rose to €657, representing a 6.3% increase over the previous year. This conclusion is based on the analysis of around one million warranties for new and used vehicles of all makes and models, in a trend that has been rising steadily for years. In 2022, the average repair cost exceeded €600 for the first time, reaching €618, to which 2023 has added another €39.
Most Expensive Failures
The most expensive component to repair—both in new and used vehicles—remains the engine. For used vehicles, the share of total claim amounts related to the engine was 25.9%, up from 23.9% the previous year. For new vehicles, it also tops the list at 20.4%, up from 19.8% the year before.
In second and third place are the fuel system (including the turbocharger), with 17.6% in used vehicles (down from 18.0%) and 17.1% in new vehicles (down from 18.9%), followed by the electrical system, with 13.4% in used vehicles (same as the previous year) and 14.7% in new vehicles (up from 13.2%).
Most Frequent Failures
In terms of frequency, the electrical system continues to be the most affected component due to the increasing electrical and electronic complexity of vehicles. For used vehicles, it accounts for 22.1% of failures (up from 21.3%), and for new vehicles, 22.2% (up from 20.2%).
The fuel system ranks second for both categories, with 17.7% of the most frequent failures in used vehicles (down from 18.2%) and 15.1% in new vehicles (down from 17.1%). In third place is the engine with 14.0% (up from 12.6%) in used vehicles, and comfort electronics with 14.2% (up from 13.0%) in new vehicles.
When Failures Occur
Statistics regarding the timing of failures—based on mileage or days—show that, compared to the previous year, failures occurred slightly later on average in 2023. For used vehicles, 27.6% of failures occurred within the first 5,000 kilometers (down from 29.2%). Only 21.2% happened after 25,000 km (up from 18.5%).
When looking at failures by days in use, the pattern is similar to the mileage-based data: 25.8% of failures occurred after 360 days, compared to 24.0% the previous year.
