ADAS Increase Repair Costs in Workshops by 37.6%

ADAS, which are already part of a large portion of the vehicle fleet and are increasingly being repaired in workshops, raise repair costs by 37.6%, according to a study from the United States.

Driver assistance systems (ADAS) have long been part of a large portion of vehicles on the roads. Calibrating these systems is now a routine task in workshops. Whether specialized in glass, bodywork, or electromechanics, all workshops must have the necessary machinery and equipment for ADAS calibration. Even tire shops are involved, as TPMS (Tire Pressure Monitoring Systems) — an ADAS that monitors tire pressure — are common.

Moreover, since last July, all new vehicles manufactured must be equipped with ten mandatory ADAS features: intelligent speed assistance; rear camera with cross-traffic detection; lane departure warning; driver fatigue and drowsiness detection; emergency braking systems BAS and EBA; vehicle immobilizer with alcohol interlock (alcolock); black box; rear seatbelt alert; adaptive cruise control; and tire pressure monitoring system.

This technology clearly means more work and higher annual revenue for workshops. How much more? A study by the American Automobile Association (AAA) estimated a 37.6% increase in repair costs related to these systems.

According to this study, which analyzed various types of accidents, most of the increased costs for repairing Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS) are linked to sensor replacement and calibration.

The AAA research reviewed both usage and maintenance of radar, ultrasonic, and camera sensors used in adaptive cruise control, collision warning, automatic emergency braking, lane departure warning and lane-keeping assist, 360º surround view, parking assistance, automatic headlight leveling, adaptive front lighting, and traffic sign recognition.

“Consumers should be aware of the repair costs associated with these technologies, but they also need to understand the importance of proper maintenance and repair, as malfunctioning systems could cause fatal accidents,” AAA explains. Repairs, including wheel alignment, windshield and side mirror replacement, may require costly calibrations to ensure that the involved ADAS function correctly.
