84% of the workshops offer repairs that involve electromechanics

Electromechanics is, among all repair specialties, the most popular one, as it is performed by 84% of workshops, and also the most profitable, with an average profit margin of 6.3% on sales.

If we were to generalize among the different vehicle repair specialties, we could say that bodywork and painting are the least profitable, tire service is the most common and quickest but offers the lowest margins for workshops, while electromechanics is by far the most profitable. Perhaps for this reason, it is also one of the most popular specialties among repair shops.

This is confirmed by the “White Paper on Workshops” prepared by Conepa and MSI, which provides a comprehensive overview of workshop management and a detailed analysis of the various services they offer.

Indeed, electromechanical service is the most common among workshops, offered by 83.64% of establishments. Most operations—79% of the total—are focused on passenger cars and commercial vehicles, highlighting the key role of electromechanics in the daily and widespread maintenance of both personal and professional vehicles.

Operations involving industrial vehicles (trucks, buses, etc.) account for 13%, while motorcycles and agricultural vehicles each represent 3%. Regarding billed time distribution, 74% corresponds to individual customers, while insurance companies and leasing or fleet contracts represent 17% and 8%, respectively.

As for vehicle age, the electromechanical department mainly services vehicles between 4 and 10 years old (43%). In second place, 41% of operations involve vehicles over 10 years old, and 16% correspond to vehicles between 0 and 4 years old. These figures show that this service is essential both for maintaining older vehicles and for repairing more modern and complex systems in newer ones.

Finally, in terms of profitability—a key performance indicator (KPI) that measures the percentage return obtained from the different services a workshop offers—this area shows the highest average profitability, at 6.30%. This is due to the technical nature of the work and the need for specialized equipment, factors that justify higher rates and contribute to greater profitability. Moreover, the constant demand for mechanical and electrical maintenance and repair services, especially in modern vehicles with advanced systems, helps boost revenue and thus profitability in this segment.
