{"id":7723,"date":"2024-10-15T09:08:36","date_gmt":"2024-10-15T07:08:36","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.fmgbrakes.com\/remsa\/?p=7723"},"modified":"2024-10-15T09:08:36","modified_gmt":"2024-10-15T07:08:36","slug":"alternatives-to-electric-cars-hydrogen-and-biofuels-for-a-zero-emission-future","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.fmgbrakes.com\/remsa\/alternatives-to-electric-cars-hydrogen-and-biofuels-for-a-zero-emission-future\/","title":{"rendered":"Alternatives to electric cars: hydrogen and biofuels for a zero-emission future"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>While the European Union has e<strong>stablished that by 2035 all new cars and light vans must reach zero emissions<\/strong>, countries such as China, Korea and Japan are committed to achieving zero emissions in the decades after 2035.<\/p>\n<p>And if all countries keep their promise, according to the <a href=\"https:\/\/climateactiontracker.org\/press\/global-update-paris-agreement-turning-point\/\">Global update: Paris Agreement Turning Point report<\/a>, the estimated date by which zero emissions will be achieved globally is 2100.<\/p>\n<p>The debate is raging, and<strong> alternatives<\/strong> such as <strong>hydrogen-based propulsion systems or biofuels<\/strong> are emerging, each with its own characteristics, benefits and drawbacks.<\/p>\n<p>Hydrogen vehicles use fuel cells to convert the chemical energy of hydrogen into electricity, emitting only water vapor.<\/p>\n<p>Vehicles with this technology offer <strong>advantages<\/strong> such as:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Zero emissions.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>High efficiency.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Fast recharging<\/strong> in a matter of minutes.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>However, they also have <strong>drawbacks<\/strong>:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Hydrogen must be <strong>produced from water or hydrocarbons.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Storage is complex.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>There are <strong>few refueling points.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>For its implementation, it is not enough to adapt the current mechanics of the car. The <strong>modifications are much more demanding<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>With respect to the alternative of biofuels, derived from biomass such as bioethanol and biodiesel, their main advantages are the following:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Their <strong>biodegradability.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Compatibility<\/strong> with existing infrastructure.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Of course, they are not perfect and their disadvantages should be taken into consideration:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Their production<strong> increases CO2 emissions<\/strong>, as a University of Michigan study has shown, instead of reducing them as originally believed.<\/li>\n<li>They are <strong>less efficient than traditional fuels<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li>Dedicating part of the cultivated areas to this type of agriculture can trigger <strong>competition<\/strong> with those dedicated to food production, in addition to causing <strong>deforestation<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>In conclusion, both hydrogen and biofuels are promising alternatives for a more sustainable automotive industry, although they have significant drawbacks that must be overcome to meet global requirements and ensure efficiency and sustainability without causing further dam<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Alternatives to electric cars: hydrogen and biofuels for a zero-emission future.
