Not only in their design or characteristics, but also in the special procedures they require in terms of handling and safety during maintenance and repair.

First of all, it should be explained that the air conditioning system in electric vehicles is in most cases based on a heat pump circuit, which is also an advanced system compared to the standard air conditioning system. So, unlike the air conditioning system in a conventional vehicle, it is a system that can both heat and cool. At the same time, it manages the temperature of the electric motor, the batteries and the vehicle’s power electronics.

The system acts as the vehicle’s thermal management system, helping the car to extend battery life and durability. The heat pump is a very energy-efficient heat resource. It ensures optimum heating and cooling performance and has less impact on the vehicle’s battery, as fewer PTC heaters are needed to achieve the same level of comfort.

When it comes to handling, it should be borne in mind that many of the parts that would be mechanical in conventional engines are fully electric in electric vehicles. For example, an all-electric, high-voltage air-conditioning compressor is used to keep the system fully functional, even when the vehicle is not moving. In addition, several electronic valves manage the circulation of the flow in different directions within the system. Other components include heat exchangers, such as the passenger compartment heat condenser or the so-called chiller, a water temperature exchanger. These additional components add to the complexity of maintaining the system.

Many electrified vehicles will not start if the air conditioning system is not working properly due to the risk of damage to the battery and electric drive components. This makes regular maintenance of the system even more important than before. In addition, many parts of the air conditioning system in this type of vehicle are high voltage and require special safety procedures that should be consulted before handling.

Just as failures can occur in conventional air conditioning systems, they can also occur in electric vehicle heat pumps. The most common failures can be leaks, inadequate compressor lubrication, internal system contamination and compressor wear. Poor system performance or a crash are consequences of not fixing these problems quickly.

Finally, when checking the air-conditioning system, workshop professionals should start with a visual check of the circuit, followed by a temperature check of the circuit components. Next, the static and working pressures of the system should be checked, followed by a circuit leak check and finally an OBD and electrical system test.

Air conditioning systems in electric vehicles are based on a heat pump circuit that has nothing to do with that of internal combustion
